IMG_0288Timothy Leung began vocal training in Hong Kong at the age of 4, and violin studies at 7. Tim was a member of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, and later Yip’s Children’s Choir. After awarded runner-up in a televized vocal competition, Tim joined an elite group of young singers who recorded regularly for children’s TV programs for Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK). Tim recorded more than 200 songs over a 4 year period. Also showing his talents as a violinist, Tim became the youngest concertmaster of the West Kowloon Youth String Orchestra at the age of 12.

Tim began focusing on the violin and orchestral conducting as a teenager after moving to Vancouver, studying with the renowned Canadian violinist Arthur Polson. Tim was the assistant concertmaster of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra. Tim made his conducting debut with his high school’s concert band, conducting a set of short pieces by Henry Mancini. As a freelance violinist, Tim performed regularly with professional and community orchestras in Vancouver.

Tim came to Toronto to pursue a graduate degree in 2001. While at University of Toronto, he became Principal Second Violin at the Hart House Orchestra. In 2003, Tim made his soloist debut at a sold-out concert in Ottawa, performing the Butterfly Lovers Concerto with the Overseas Chinese Youth Orchestra. Tim currently teaches violin and viola privately in Toronto; since 2004, he has had more than 70 students with ages ranging from 4 to 65. Tim continues to perform in chamber music groups in both Vancouver and Toronto.

Tim returned to choral and orchestral conducting in 2009. He has been guest conductor for choirs and orchestral ensembles at the North Toronto Chinese Alliance Church (NTCAC), Toronto Chinese United Church (TCUC), Toronto Maple Leaf Choir and Grace Melodia. Tim has coached local orchestras at rehearsals. In 2013, Tim was appointed Choir Director at TCUC, where he now conducts on more than 60 occasions each year. As a conductor, Tim is known for his concise musical interpretation, clear directions and efficient rehearsal style.

Tim actively works with community groups and local churches to build a strategy to provide music training (choral and instrumental) to underprivileged youth in the Greater Toronto Area. In between his many musical endeavours, Tim is also an avid cyclist, and a front-line volunteer dealing with homelessness, sex trade and human trafficking issues in Toronto.
